Hagedorn (1984) studied internal and external consultants and determined that internal consultants had an advantage in terms
of understanding the internal workings of the organization and that external consultants had an advantage in terms of the
nature of the relationships they were able to establish with the leadership team. The effective consultant is one who is able
to blend the best of both internal and external consulting. According to Canback (1998), three are three styles of consulting:
expert, diagnostician, and process. The expert consultant is one with specific expertise. The diagnostician brings a broad
background to the role that enables the consultant to effective solve many organizational problems and facilitates implementation.
The process consultant focuses on identifying problems and solutions specific to business processes. In a later article, Canback
(1999) notes that the role of the consultant requires objectivity, experience and productivity.
